SC declines urgent hearing to supermodel`s husband

The Supreme Court on Friday refused to accord an urgent hearing to the plea of the estranged British husband of yesteryear`s supermodel Ujjwala Raut against cancellation of his coveted Person of Indian Origin card and his impending deportation.A bench of Chief Justice KG Balakrishnan and Justice P Sathasivam slated the hearing of Craig Maxwell`s plea for Tuesday.

Appearing for Maxwell, advocate Devdatt Kamat pleaded to the bench that his client, presently in hiding, runs the risk of being caught and deported to London following cancellation of his PIO card by the central government Aug 10.

Kamat told the court that Maxwell had approached the Goa bench of the Bombay High Court earlier, but even it refused to accord an urgent hearing to his plea and slated the matter for further hearing Aug 28.

The apex court bench, however, refused to accord an urgent hearing to Maxwell`s plea, saying he has not yet surrendered to the authorities. In his lawsuit, Maxwell, a British national residing in Goa, sought that the court ask the central government take no steps to deport him and restore his PIO card.

Maxwell said he married the supermodel in New York in 2002 and since his wife, being a supermodel, was reluctant to give up her career, he gave up his own business of film production so he could take care of their daughter Ksha, born to them June 2005.

He told the court that his marriage with Raut eventually turned sour with his wife moving a Mumbai family court for divorce in 2008. He alleged she "being an extremely influential and powerful person", has created havoc in his life by lodging false complaints against him.

He claimed Raut was out to exercise all her influence at her command to throw him out of India and it was she who got his PIO card cancelled by misusing her influence with bureaucrats.

Country queen Shania Twain has planned a big surprise for her fans on her birthday next week. The `You are Still the One` hitmaker, who will be turning 44, has promised to give her fans a "special gift" in a video posted on her website, reported Contactmusic.

The video clip, shot in the garden of Twain`s home in Switzerland, has her thanking all her fans for remembering her
son Eja`s eighth birthday, before giving hints about the surprise.

"Hi everyone, Shania here. First to start off, I want to thank you for all the beautiful birthday wishes for Eja`s birthday. Secondly, if you haven`t already seen on my website for August 28 on my birthday, I will be giving you a small gift of thanks for all of your support over the last year...

You`ve been really wonderful, thank you so much," she says in the video.

The "gift" is thought to be a "very personal travelogue" documenting Shania`s 2008 split from her husband, producer Robert `Mutt` Lange, who reportedly had an affair with her best friend.

"It`s not new music, but it`s a piece that Shania put together of what she`s been doing for the last year. It`s definitely a totally new side of Shania that no one`s ever seen," a source said.

I don't want to work with Kareena: Saif Ali Khan

Known for his lover-boy image owing to his fixation with Kareena Kapoor, dishy Saif Ali Khan is often rumoured to have pushed filmmakers into casting his ladylove.

The actor, who had face flak from co-star Deepika for promoting his arm-candy Bebo during the promotion of his maiden production ‘Love Aaj Kal’, has now decided to set the record straight as he states he only wants to work with his lady ‘once in a while’.

Even though the actor turned producer has cast Kareena in his next production venture ‘Agent Vinod’, he maintains that the casting was solely on credentials and his heart had nothing to do with it. Besides coming together in Rensil D’Silva’s ‘Kurban’ the two are also said to be cast in ‘Race 2’-a speculation Saif has denied.

Out to smash all baseless speculations, Saif said, "I am not doing ‘Race 2’ with Kareena. The script is still being written and then the cast will be selected.”

As for working with other actors, Chote Nawab said, “We have to be very clear about this thing. It is a profession, and though Bebo and I personally involved but professionally we are not stupid. I want to work with her, once in a while. I mean there is so much Saif-Kareena going on even off-screen that no good director will be least interested in casting us. Which I why I am glad that ‘Kurbaan’ is not your regular love story. And we are not doing the regular kind of things in it."

Well, that should set the record straight!
